Bag of Medical Waste

Today I decided to jump into the vlogging arena. I’ve been needing to clean out my purse because the collection of diabetes accessories and trash has become unwieldy to the point of being dangerous. So I settled onto the sofa with my bag to sort through it. I felt like my bag was a metaphor for my life. It looks normal on the outside for the most part, and certainly contains many normal things (i.e. loose change, wallet, keys, etc.), but when you dive in and examine the contents, it’s littered with all things diabetes.

Much thanks to Jason who helped me edit it. I forgot that YouTube will only allow videos that are less than 10 minutes long, and mine originally clocked in at just over 13 minutes. We trimmed little bits throughout to get it down to 9:58, so if it seems a wee bit choppy at times, that’s why. I can’t see myself making a habit of this vlogging thing, but if I happen to get any more ideas for it, I think it will be easier next time – especially if I keep it shorter than 10 minutes.

The whole time I watched this I kept thinking about Wakko from Animaniacs and his bag that he manages to pull anything and everything out of. Anyone? Anyone?

Good stuff. I wouldn’t feel too much pressure to do these on a regular basis. If you vlog when you are properly motivated then we’ll know that we’re in for a real treat.

Hee, hee – your purse is bigger than mine. I don’t know that I have the guts to empty my purse in public. I’m impressed!

  3. JaimieH says:

That was great LeeAnn =) I need to clean out my purse too! LOL

my kids got the biggest kick of seeing your “little fella?” lol He’s bigger than my chihuahua haha…how much does he weigh? what kind of lizard? what does he eat? how old is he? (can u tells kids are asking questions?)

  4. Cara says:

    Love the lizard! :)

  5. CALpumper says:

I was thinking you are missing a cell phone? Or was it just somewhere else? ;-)
And you could fit your lizard in the purse, whoa is he big.

    Thanks for sharing.
    And holy Big bag.
I debate this constantly, “Should I get one big bag for all the ‘stuff’ I need to carry around?”
You sure are set for an emergency.

You need compartments for that bag. :)

Awww, I loved your vlog. It made me think of that game show – I think it was Let’s Make A Deal – where they would ask the audience for an item and who ever pulled it out of their purse fastest won. You’d be good on that show!!! :) Love the lizard. I was a little afraid of that big tongue whipping around (the lizards, not yours!!), until he gave you a kiss. He seems so sweet. (He’s a he, right?) I love that you call yourself “Mommy” when you talk to him – I do that with K.C. too and I’ve always been afraid to admit it to people.

Oh yeah I am so glad to see I am not the only one who carries a tote bag for a purse LOL !!! I know I dont have the guts to clean out my bag in public either and not sure I could on camera depends on I guess how much they were paying me LOL!!! not really surely would be too embarassed and would probably open up a real can of worms . Oh well enough I could go on and on but I will spare everyone that . great blog btw dear . Have a great day .

The problem with big bags is they don’t make enough pockets in them. So even though one has can carry everything, you spend 10 minutes looking through them ,till you reach the sediment at the bottom(along with the test strips, change, receipts, etc) I’ve had people refuse to search through my bag (upon seeing the D trash) because it looked lethal(really, who can blame them?)

    Cute lizard! and great V-LOG!

What a great vlog. You’ve really got a knack for this. I hope you keep doing these because I like seeing you talk…not just reading your blogs (which are good too).

  10. wayne says:

;) thought I am shocked that you’re not the one with back problems!

  11. From the beginning I thought, “I wonder if she’s got the lizard in the bottom of the bag”. It was fun to see him (and you).

  12. deanusa says:

    holy cow!!!lol
ok does that mean us guys are like under prepared?

  13. Wow! It was like one of those little clown cars where they just keep on coming and coming and coming! LOL! Awesome!

You could *totally* fit a sharps container in there LeeAnn! But then you’d miss the opportunities to test your BG from errant finger stabs. :-)

Seriously though – great vlog. I’m so glad you decided to do that, I always feel like I know people just a little bit better that way.

  14. jenny says:

great vlog! Was your lizard just chillin on the couch that whole time!??

I have WAY too much trash in my purse too! Its bad, my little sister just assumes its a trash can and I catch her stuffing gum wrapper in it all the time! Who can blame her though with all the trash I stuff in it!

  15. Mom says:

I really liked it. I think you should do occasional vlogs. Kudos to Jason the camera person. That bag looks familiar. Is it one we re-cycled?
    Love, Mom

Thanks for all the great comments! I’m glad y’all liked it. I was afraid a video of me cleaning out my bag would be as boring as it sounds, lol.

Jaimie, Smeagol is like 9.5lb. He’s a savannah monitor, which is a cousin of the Komodo dragon. He’s 5 years old, and should live to be 12-15 I think. He’s a carnivore (like his big man-eating cousin). When he was a little guy, he ate crickets and baby mice. Then we just fed him mice when he got bigger. The vet wanted him on a lower fat diet though, so now he mostly eats reduced fat cat food, with occasional mice treats. That part is kind of gruesome, but that’s what he eats. I might post a vlog of me feeding him cat food some day even though it’s irrelevant to diabetes, because that’s actually pretty entertaining. Savannah monitors are naturally very aggressive since they’re carnivores, and he was quite the pistol when he was young (bit me square on the nose when he was a baby), but we spend so much time with him, he’s super tame now, like a big fat cat.

Karen, I totally laughed at the comparison to Let’s Make a Deal! I watched that with my great-grandmother when I was a kid, and I loved that show. I totally forgot about that part where Monty Hall ask for weird things from people’s bags! Chris, unfortunately, Animaniacs was before my time :P

It is a large bag (not recycled, Mom, this one is from Target). I agree that more compartments would be better, but since it’s really a laptop bag, I think it’s designed more for also keeping files or business kind of stuff. Type1emt, I don’t know how many times I’ve been somewhere with that big bag, trying to pay for something, and starting to panic because I’m digging and digging and can’t find my wallet just because it’s lost in the abyss! I hate switching purses all the time, so I’ve just been using that one even when I’m not carrying my laptop. Unfortunately, because it’s so spacious, I have a way of piling more junk in there. Scott, I really should keep an old Diet Coke bottle or something like that for sharps though.

Don’t you know, even though I cleaned it out two days ago, it’s already littered with candy wrappers again? ;)

Thanks again everyone! Because of all the nice comments, I won’t be so hesitant to vlog next time I’m inspired with an idea!

And they wonder why ujs men don’t want to go into a womans purse.

  18. Barbara says:

I think you could use some plastic containers or baggies for some of your “treasures”. Would make it a lot easier to pull out one bag with all like stuff together. Even use one just for trash, like stash and trash, one easy step.

  19. Bethanne says:

Though I can’t claim a cluttered purse, my husband, just a few days ago, said to the kids about my desk’s trash bin, “Mom really needs to work on her test strip aim.” I have diabetes waste clutter in a few key spots throughout the house–like my dresser. LOL Great idea with the Vlog. I will have to visit again soon. Take care.
