Today was the 5th annual Diabetes Art Day. When I started DAD in 2010, I figured it would be a one-time event. I’m so grateful… I mean, so grateful that it has endured. I have lots of thoughts and emotions swirling in my head and heart after spending the day finishing my own painting, looking at the incredible variety of art submissions, reading blogs, sharing art, commenting, dealing with the DAD website issues (argh… another issue, but alas, a big chunk of the day since Diabetes Art Day is a web-based initiative).

The thought that floated to the top as I sat to write this was how much I love seeing everyone’s work because I get to see a different side of them. For all the closeness and family spirit that characterizes the DOC, I feel a loss at not being able to develop and foster relationships in person. The artwork offers new insights into people though. If everyone were a house, their Facebook page would represent one window, twitter accounts another, blogs another. Each window gives me a chance to get a new view into the house. But the art lets me walk into the front door. I suspect others might argue that blogs are the front door, or maybe Facebook is, but for me, the artwork represents the front door because I feel like it’s so much more personal, conveying depth and vulnerability that is a little more raw.

That’s what I love about Diabetes Art Day. It’s a personal invitation to come into everyone’s home, to see them as they are. The art offers an opportunity to know someone in a way that I wouldn’t otherwise know them. And I love that.

My Diabetes Art Day submission is a painting, titled, “Hemoglobin A1c #2.”

Many thanks to you, Lee Ann, for creating and hosting this wonderful event each year. It has been a pleasure to participate each of the last five years. I look forward to even more. Love your painting.

    Lots of love, my friend.

    Lee Ann,
When I met you many years ago I knew you were special but I never imagined the amazing woman you would turn into. You have made such a profound impression on me with your blog, the World Diabetes Day Postcard Exchange, and the Diabetes Art Day. You are an asset to the world and the DOC. I love you girl.
    Andrea

Thank you so much for doing this every year. I always learn a lot about myself and about others. My goal next year is to get Pete to make art with me. He doesn’t think he’s creative, but I know once he started he’d be surprised at what comes pouring out.

I love what you continue to create, both in your own art and in the DOC. Thank you for being you. <3
